Welcoming Your Guardian: What Makes a Difference

The key handover is the most crucial moment of the pet-sitting assignment. What happens during these 1 to 2 hours sets the tone for everything that follows.
Here's how to do it right.
Arrange the Meeting Well Before Departure
Ideally 1 to 2 weeks prior, not the day before. Here's why:
- You'll have time to answer questions without the stress of impending departure.
- Your pets will meet the guardian in your presence, which is fundamental.
- If something feels off, you'll have time to find someone else.
A 90-minute meeting in advance is far better than a 20-minute key handover on the morning of departure with suitcases in the entryway.
The Home Tour: Be Thorough
Walk through the entire house with your guardian. Not just the kitchen and living room.
What's often overlooked:
- The utility room (boiler, meters)
- Areas of the house where your pets are usually allowed or forbidden
- Equipment with quirks (oven that heats intensely, shower with temperamental pressure, door that doesn't close properly)
- Exterior access (gate, garden, bike shed)

Pet Introductions
Allow your pets to approach the guardian at their own pace. Do not force interaction.
A dog spontaneously approaching someone in your presence is a good sign for the pet-sitting assignment.
Demonstrate routines in front of the guardian: how you give kibble, how you put on the harness, how you manage bedtime. Showing is often better than explaining.
On Departure Day: Leave Naturally
Long goodbyes stress animals. Leave as you would on any ordinary morning. No dramatic farewells, no repeating "I'll miss you" 10 times in front of the dog; they pick up on emotions and anticipate abandonment.
A calm and natural departure is the best gift you can give your pet before a pet-sitting assignment.
During the Assignment: The Right Distance
Remain available without being intrusive. One message per day from your guardian is sufficient. Do not ask for updates every 4 hours.
If your guardian doesn't spontaneously send updates and you're concerned, send a message. But wait 24 hours before worrying. Some guardians communicate less but provide excellent care.
Upon Your Return: The Meaningful Gesture
Thank your guardian in person if possible. Leave a detailed review within 48 hours. Mention something specific, not just "very good, I recommend."
Guardians who receive precise and sincere reviews grow and become better guardians. It's an investment in the entire community.
