Golden Retriever: All you need to know before boarding, pet care guide Guardiens

The Golden is often described as the perfect dog. To some extent, they are, being sociable, patient, tolerant, and good with children and cats. However, "easy" does not mean "without demands." A poorly cared-for Golden can develop severe separation anxiety, gain weight quickly, and become destructive if their exercise needs are not met.

This guide is for owners going away and for local trusted persons providing care.

Temperament: What You Really Need to Know

The Golden is a pack dog. They need to belong to a group, to be included, to participate. A caregiver who ignores them for 6 hours is not doing them any good, even in the most beautiful house in the world.

    Their strengths for boarding:

    • Naturally accepts strangers
    • Adapts to a new environment within 24-48 hours
    • Tolerates other animals
    • Responds well to new people if they are consistent and kind

    Points to watch out for:

    • Frequent separation anxiety in individuals very attached to their owner
    • Voracious appetite; they will eat anything offered. Strict rationing is mandatory.
    • Underestimated energy level; an adult Golden needs a minimum of 1 hour 30 minutes of activity per day

    Health: Points to Monitor

    Hip Dysplasia

A predisposed breed. For individuals over 7 years old or those with a slight limp: avoid repetitive stairs, jumping from heights, and very slippery surfaces.

    Hypothyroidism

Common in the breed. If the dog is on medication (daily tablet), never miss a dose. Symptoms of a missed dose: lethargy, sudden sensitivity to cold.

    Skin Tumors

Goldens easily develop cysts and lipomas. This is not an emergency during boarding, unless a mass grows rapidly or bleeds. In that case, notify the owner immediately.

    Heatstroke

Thick coat, stout build. No outings between 12 PM and 5 PM in summer. Constant fresh water. A Golden panting excessively at rest is overheating; provide shade, fresh water, and go to the vet if it doesn't improve within 10 minutes.

    Daily Needs During Boarding

    Outings:

    • Minimum 1 hour 30 minutes of activity spread throughout the day
    • An active outing in the morning (fetch, trot) + a calm walk in the evening
    • Goldens love water; if there's an accessible lake or river, it's a valuable bonus. Dry their ears afterwards to prevent ear infections.

    Mental stimulation:

Stuffed Kong, snuffle mat, short obedience sessions. A mentally stimulated Golden is much calmer than one that runs around aimlessly.

    Human contact:

Regular presence throughout the day. Avoid long periods of solitude. In-home care is ideal, as the familiar environment stabilizes the animal.

    What the Owner Must Prepare

    • Written meal protocol (ration, time, brand)
    • Any medications with administration times
    • Contact information for usual vet + emergency vet
    • Favorite toys and bed
    • Swimming instructions if applicable (a Golden can swim alone in a private pool; ensure the caregiver supervises)

    Golden Retriever Near You

A very common breed in your area, in all environments.

    In the city (Lyon, Grenoble)

Perfectly adaptable. Parc de la Tête d'Or in Lyon, Parc Paul Mistral in Grenoble, large accessible spaces for long outings. Summer urban heat must be rigorously managed.

In the mountains (Annecy, Chambéry, Haute-Savoie)

Ideal environment. Goldens love snow, lakes, and open trails. Be careful of frozen surfaces for dysplastic individuals. Always dry them thoroughly after swimming in Lake Annecy or Lake Bourget.

In suburban areas (Caluire, Écully, Meylan)

A garden equals happiness. Monitor fences; Goldens explore without trying to escape, but they might dig under a hedge if something intrigues them on the other side.
