Labrador Retriever: Everything You Need to Know Before Having Them Looked After

The Labrador has been the most popular breed in France for twenty years. This is no accident; they are an adaptable dog that forgives mistakes and loves everyone. But "easy" does not mean "without demands." A poorly looked after Labrador can destroy a sofa in four hours and develop lasting separation anxiety.
This guide is intended for owners going away and for guardians welcoming a Labrador into their home. Both need to know the same things: what a Labrador truly needs to remain calm when their environment changes.
Temperament: What You Need to Know
The Labrador is fundamentally social. They cannot tolerate prolonged solitude; 8 hours alone is too much. They are not aggressive, but they are powerful: an excited 30 kg Labrador jumping on someone is a real problem, especially with children or elderly people.
Their strengths for pet-sitting:
- Adapts quickly to a new environment
- Accepts strangers without excessive wariness
- Responds well to clear routines
- Tolerates the presence of other animals well
Points of vigilance:
- Frequent separation anxiety in individuals not accustomed to being alone
- Structural bulimia; they will eat anything they are given and more. Rations must be strictly adhered to.
- High energy level until 3-4 years old, a minimum of two outings per day, one of which should be long
Health: Points to Monitor During Pet-Sitting
Hip dysplasia
A predisposed breed. Avoid repetitive stairs and slippery surfaces for individuals over 7 years old or those with a slight limp.
Ear infections
Labrador's floppy ears retain moisture. After every swim or intense rain, dry the ear flaps with a clean cloth. Any suspicious odor or repeated scratching = call the owner.
Overweight
The number one problem of the breed. During pet-sitting, no deviation from the ration, no treats unauthorized by the owner. Even in the face of a Labrador's pleading eyes, and they are experts at it.
Heatstroke
Dense coat, powerful physique. No outings between 12 PM and 5 PM in summer. Fresh water continuously available. Cooling mat recommended for summer pet-sitting.

Daily Needs During Pet-Sitting
Minimum outings:
- 2 long outings (30-45 min) + 1-2 short ones
- Ideal: an active outing in the morning (trotting, ball game) + a calm walk in the evening
Mental stimulation:
Labradors get bored quickly. A stuffed Kong, a snuffle mat, or 10 minutes of obedience training are more effective than 30 minutes of walking for cognitive fatigue.
Food:
Strictly follow the owner's protocol. Number of meals, quantity, time. No improvisation.
Human contact:
A Labrador alone for more than 5-6 consecutive hours can develop destructive behaviors. In-home pet-sitting is ideal for this breed; regular human presence is enough to stabilize them.
Having Your Labrador Looked After: What to Prepare
For the owner:
- Written sheet with exact ration, meal times, any medications (flea/tick preventative)
- List of forbidden foods (grapes, chocolate, onion, toxic for all dogs)
- Contact information for the usual veterinarian
- Normal behaviors vs. warning signs
- Favorite toys; the continuity of familiar objects helps with the transition
For the guardian:
- A physical meeting before pet-sitting is recommended; the Labrador must have "approved" you in the owner's presence
- First evening: maintain the usual routine as much as possible
- Do not overcompensate with treats; this creates agitation, not security
Labrador and House-Sitting Local to You
The Labrador is the most frequently looked after breed on Guardiens local to you. Here are some regional specificities to be aware of:
In the city (Lyon, Grenoble, Clermont-Ferrand)
Outings to Parc de la Tête d'Or, Parc Paul Mistral, the Saône quays. Avoid peak heat hours in summer; the Labrador suffers faster than they show.
In the mountains (Annecy, Chambéry, Chamonix)
Ideal terrain for this breed. Be careful of icy surfaces for dysplastic individuals. Always dry thoroughly after outings in the snow.
In peri-urban areas (Caluire, Écully, Meylan)
The Labrador with a garden is in their natural environment. Monitor fences; this breed rarely runs away but explores a lot.
Finding a Guardian for Your Labrador
On Guardiens, you can post a free ad, and available local guardians will apply directly. Each guardian has been manually verified: ID, cross-referenced reviews, badges awarded by other owners.
You leave. Your Labrador stays with someone who knows exactly what they are doing.
