Dog Walks and Parks in Grenoble: The 2026 Guide in Grenoble, Guardiens

Grenoble ranks as the sixth best city in France to live with a dog. This is well-deserved, as the city made concrete efforts in 2025 with a plan for integrating dogs into public spaces that is unparalleled anywhere else in France. However, rules change, zones evolve, and making a mistake can lead to a €135 fine in the mountains.

This guide is updated for 2026. Data verified.

What Changed in 2025 in Grenoble

Off-leash areas, a first in France.

Since July 2025, the City of Grenoble has rolled out zones where dogs can roam off-leash in several parks. This is unprecedented in France; no other major city has implemented this on such a scale.

Affected parks (off-leash zones marked by signs):

    • Paul-Mistral Park, since July 2025
    • Vallier-Catane Park, since July 2025
    • Hoche Garden, since July 2025
    • Roger-Genin Square, since July 2025
    • Champs-Élysées Park, since September 2025
    • Isère riverbanks and towpath, since September 2025

In total: 7 hectares of freedom within the city.

The zones are not fenced but are delimited by signs. The dog remains under the responsibility of its guardian and must be callable within a maximum of 3 attempts.

Category 1 and 2 dogs are excluded.

    The 5 Best Spots

    Paul-Mistral Park, city center

The benchmark park in Grenoble. 26 hectares, accessible on foot from most neighborhoods. An off-leash zone has been active since July 2025 in a part of the park; check the signs on-site for the exact perimeter.

Dogs must be on a leash in the rest of the park. Ideal for daily outings without a car.

    Île d'Amour Park, Meylan

27 hectares, 10 minutes from the center. “Grenoble’s Central Park” according to local residents. Dogs allowed on a leash. Fitness trail, varied paths, natural atmosphere. Accessible by public transport.

Ideal for active dogs who need space without going into the mountains.

    Bois des Vouillants, Seyssinet-Pariset

475 hectares west of Grenoble. Hiking trails, dense forest, quiet. Dogs allowed on a leash.

Warning: hunting is permitted in this wood. Avoid between September and February, especially on weekends and public holidays. Outside this period, it is one of the most beautiful nature walks accessible from Grenoble.

    Isère Riverbanks, towpath

Flat route along the river, passable for several kilometers. An off-leash zone has been open since September 2025 on a section of the path.

Ideal for long morning walks or dogs who need to run. Accessible from the Grenoble quays.

    Hubert Dubedout Park, Eybens/Poisat

44 hectares at the foot of the Belledonne massif. Dogs allowed on a leash.

Warning: hunting permitted in this area. Same precautions as for Les Vouillants. Ideal outside hunting season for a nature walk with mountain views.

The Massifs Around Grenoble, Exact Rules

    Vercors

Dogs are allowed on a leash on most trails in the Regional Natural Park. Prohibited, even on a leash, in the Hauts-Plateaux Nature Reserve. A €135 fine for non-compliance. Check the route on IGN maps before you go.

    Chartreuse

Dogs are allowed on a leash on most trails. Summer pasture areas (alpages) are prohibited for dogs from June 10 to October 15, even on a leash. Presence of Patous (livestock guardian dogs): if you encounter one, put your dog on a short leash, remain calm, and go around the flock.

    Belledonne

Fewer restrictions than the Vercors and Chartreuse. Dogs on a leash on marked trails. Be vigilant in alpine pasture areas in summer.

What a Guardiens Guardian in Grenoble Knows

A local guardian knows the off-leash zones in Paul-Mistral Park, where dogs have been able to run freely since 2025.

They know that Les Vouillants should be avoided in autumn due to hunting. They are familiar with the Comboire Emergency House and the number 04 80 42 33 23 for difficult nights.

This is the difference between someone who lives in Grenoble and someone who is discovering the city on the day of their arrival.
