Parks and Walks with Your Dog in Lyon: The Complete Guide

Lyon is often cited as one of the most dog-friendly cities in France. The reality is more nuanced: many parks are off-limits to dogs, rules vary by district, and fenced dog parks are fewer than one might think.
This guide lists the genuinely accessible spaces, with exact rules and practical advice for each location. Updated 2026.
The 6 Essential Spaces
Parc de la Tête d'Or, Lyon 6th Arrondissement
The largest urban park in Lyon (117 hectares). Dogs are allowed on a leash throughout the park, including near the lake and zoo.
Off-leash area: the Pelouse des Ébats, divided into two fenced dog parks, one for small dogs and puppies, one for large dogs. Water points available.
Tip: avoid weekends between 10 AM and 5 PM in summer, as it's peak attendance, guaranteeing stress for anxious dogs. Early morning before 8 AM, it's a completely different city.
Grand Parc Miribel-Jonage, Vaulx-en-Velin
2,200 hectares, 20 minutes from Lyon. A paradise for active dogs. Marked trails, forests, lakes, beaches; some areas allow swimming with dogs. Off-leash walking is possible in less frequented areas; leashes are mandatory on beaches during high season.
Caution: do not let your dog approach livestock areas (cows, horses are present). Car access is recommended.
Parc de Parilly, Lyon 8th Arrondissement / Bron / Vénissieux
178 hectares accessible by tram and metro. Two fenced, grassy, and tree-lined dog parks:
- First: entrance on Avenue Charles de Gaulle, next to Renault Trucks
- Second: entrance on Rue Lionel Terray, alongside Boulevard Bollaert
Both dog parks are closed to Category 1 and 2 dogs, a little-known but applicable rule.
Parc Sergent Blandan, Lyon 7th Arrondissement
A contemporary park with a fenced dog park and agility modules. Ideal for athletic dogs and informal training sessions. Direct access from Jean Macé metro station. Less crowded than Tête d'Or, a good choice for less social dogs.
Parc de la Feyssine, Villeurbanne
45 hectares along the Rhône. Wooded trails, a natural atmosphere 15 minutes from the city center. Technically, dogs must be on a leash according to municipal decree. In practice, the space is vast, and walkers are respectful. Ideal for long morning walks.
Parc de l'Impasse Chazière, Croix-Rousse (4th Arrondissement)
A fenced area of 2,000 m², off-leash allowed. The only dog-friendly space in the 4th arrondissement, as many parks in Croix-Rousse are closed to dogs. No water point: bring something to hydrate your dog. Graffiti decoration on the walls, a unique spot.
Urban Walks Without a Car
Quais de Saône, Right Bank (1st–5th Arrondissements)
3 km pedestrian zone with no traffic from Saint-Paul northwards. Flat, shaded in summer, usable all year round. The best urban walking route with a calm dog.
Fourvière and the Slopes (5th Arrondissement)
Ascent possible on foot via marked paths. Dogs allowed. Panoramic views of Lyon. Funicular access possible with a muzzle and ticket. Irregular terrain, not recommended for elderly dogs with joint problems.
Tour de la Presqu'île
Walks along the Rhône and Saône on a leash. Some quays have accessible green spaces. Avoid peak tourist hours on weekends.

Parc du Brûlet, Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon
Fenced off-leash dog area, open 7 AM–8 PM. Provinces-Chavril neighborhoods. A second dog area is planned for the Beaunant and Plan du Loup neighborhoods. Ideal for residents of West Lyon without a car.

What a Local Guardian Knows
A Guardiens guardian in Lyon knows these places. They know that Tête d'Or should be avoided between 10 AM and 5 PM in summer with a stressed dog. They know that Miribel-Jonage is worth the trip for an active dog that really needs to run. They know 3115 and the address of Mermoz.
That's the difference a local guardian from your community makes, rather than a stranger discovering Lyon on the day of care.
