Checklist: Everything You Need to Prepare Before Going on Vacation, Guardiens

You're leaving in 48 hours. Your guardian arrives tomorrow. Here’s everything you should have prepared, in order.

This checklist is what the most experienced Guardiens pet owners use. It takes 2 hours to complete and prevents 90% of problems during pet-sitting.

    The Animals

    • Exact written food portion (grams or measurements, not "a handful") + meal times
    • Food brand and reference visible in the cupboard or on the package
    • Medications with name, dose, administration time, and what they look like (photo if possible)
    • Contact information for your usual veterinarian (name + phone + address)
    • Emergency veterinary number (3115 or local)
    • Signed authorization for care (necessary for the guardian to make medical decisions)
    • List of normal behaviors (where it sleeps, how long it eats, how it reacts to strangers, to noises)
    • List of alert signals (what is NOT normal for this animal)
    • Favorite toys and comfort items left accessible
    • Tattoo number or microchip reference

    The House

    • Access codes noted (door, gate, alarm, key box if applicable)
    • Wifi code
    • Location of the electricity meter, main water shut-off valve, circuit breaker
    • Heating instructions (usual setting, frost-free mode if it's a secondary residence)
    • Trash collection days and times
    • Deliveries expected during your absence (date, content, what to do with them)
    • Name and number of a trusted person
    • Tradesmen/emergency contacts if it's an older house (plumber, electrician)
    • Watering instructions (indoor and outdoor plants, frequency, quantity)
    • Pool if applicable: products, maintenance frequency, safety protocol

Documents to Leave for the Guardian

    • Your contact number reachable abroad (with country code if outside of France)
    • Number of a close relative in case of absolute emergency where you are unreachable
    • Signed authorization for veterinary care
    • Authorization to stay (useful if the guardian is questioned by a local community member)
    • Exact date and time of your return

    The 3 Most Frequent Mistakes

    Mistake 1: Verbal information

Everything you say aloud during key handover will be forgotten or poorly remembered. Everything must be written down. Use the house guide on Guardiens; it’s structured so you don't forget anything.

Mistake 2: Changing the routine before leaving

Do not change your pet's habits in the days leading up to your departure. Visible suitcases, agitation, prolonged goodbyes, all this creates anticipatory anxiety. Leave as you normally would.

    Mistake 3: Being unreachable

Your guardian doesn't need to call you every day. But they must be able to reach you within 30 minutes if necessary. Make sure your number works at your destination and leave an emergency contact.

    Use the Guardiens House Guide

On Guardiens, the owner profile includes a structured house guide that you fill out once and update for each pet-sitting assignment. The guardian has access to it as soon as the booking is confirmed. No need to explain everything again each time.
