La Croix-Rousse: Mountain Charm in the City

This is my favorite. The 'working hill', as it's called, features secret 'traboules' (passageways), an absolutely fantastic Sunday market (one of the most beautiful in France, I'd say), and a village atmosphere. The slopes? They're a workout with a big dog. Imagine yourself with a 35 kg Labrador pulling on their leash up the Grande Côte... It builds character. But at the top, the reward is there: the Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse, its plane trees, and the view of the Presqu'île.

💡 On-the-ground tip: Take the funicular (free with a TCL ticket) if you're with a tired dog. It accepts animals!

Monplaisir: The Neighborhood of Cats (and Friendly People)

Quiet, residential, with its small shops and inner courtyards. I looked after a ginger cat there for 10 days, a true king who reigned over the neighborhood. The local people all knew him by name. Monplaisir is that: closeness, human warmth.

Confluence: The Lyon of the Future

Modern, design-led, with the Musée des Confluences as a backdrop. The riverbanks are developed, wide, perfect for walks with a dog. Less charm than Croix-Rousse, but more practicality.

Vieux Lyon: Postcard Perfect, but Watch Out for the Cobblestones

Magnificent, of course. But the cobblestones are tough on small paws. And crowded restaurant terraces with a dog aren't always easy. It's better to cross the Saône and go to the riverbanks for peace and quiet.

🌳 Parc de la Tête d'Or: 117 Hectares of Animal Happiness

If you only know one place in Lyon, this is it. 117 hectares right in the 6th arrondissement. It's huge, it's free, and it's the favorite playground for all Lyonnais dogs.

What I love:

The lake: the loop is about 2.5 km, it's flat, perfect for elderly dogs or quiet strolls
The rose garden: in spring, it's a festival of colors and scents (dogs love to sniff)
The large lawns: ideal for playing fetch (dogs must be kept on a leash, but you can find more discreet spots)
The African plain: zebras, giraffes, flamingos... Watch your dog's face when they see a giraffe for the first time 😄

⚠️ Important: Dogs are allowed on a leash in the park, but forbidden in the botanical garden and the zoo. Please respect the signs; park rangers are vigilant.

🚶 The Riverbanks: My Favorite Walking Ground

Lyon is lucky enough to have two rivers (well, one river and one tributary, for purists). And the riverbanks are fantastic for walks.

Rhône Riverbanks (Left Bank)

5 km of developed promenade, from the Cité Internationale to Gerland. Skaters, joggers, families, and many dogs. In the evening, it's magical with the sunset over Fourvière.

Saône Riverbanks (Right Bank)

Quieter, more intimate. Quai Fulchiron in Vieux Lyon is superb. And if you continue north, you'll reach Île Barbe, a little-known and absolutely magnificent spot.

🐕 Secret spot: Île Barbe, accessible on foot from Caluire. A small green paradise where dogs can let off steam by the water (outside swimming areas).

☕ Dog-Friendly Places I Recommend

Lyon is quite welcoming to dogs on terraces. Here are my favorites:

Slake Coffee (7th): specialty coffee, shaded terrace, water bowl for dogs
Le Simone (1st): Sunday brunch with your dog, relaxed atmosphere
Les Berthom (several locations): craft beers and dogs welcome

🚋 Getting Around Lyon with a Pet

The TCL network (metro, tram, bus) accepts small dogs in a bag or basket. For large dogs, it's theoretically forbidden in the metro, but in the tram and bus, it's tolerated on a leash and muzzled during off-peak hours.

💡 My tip: Tram T1 (Debourg ↔ IUT Feyssine) runs along the Rhône and drops you directly at Parc de la Tête d'Or. Handy when your dog's paws are tired.

🌡️ Seasons in Lyon for Pet Sitting

Spring: the best period. Parks are in bloom, temperatures are mild. High demand for guardiens.
Summer: it's hot (often 35°C+). Avoid walks between 12 PM and 4 PM. Remember to bring water!
Autumn: the colors of the Tête d'Or are magnificent. A quiet season for demand.
Winter: the Lyonnais fog is a reality. But cozy evenings with a cat on your lap are pure bliss.
