Succeeding in your first sit: what no one tells you, Guardiens

Your first sit is the most important step in your journey on Guardiens. It generates your first review, your first badges, and sets the tone for your next 10 sits.

A good first review opens doors. A bad first review closes them permanently.

Here’s what truly makes a difference.

    Before the sit: the meeting

Do not skip this step. Meet the owner in person before taking the keys. Ideally twice: a presentation meeting, then the key handover.

What you should do during this meeting:

    With the animals:

Allow them to come to you. Do not force contact. A dog that refuses to approach you during the visit is a signal. Discuss it with the owner, understand why, and suggest a second meeting if necessary.

    With the house:

Do a complete tour. Identify equipment (boiler, electrical panel, shut-off valve), any areas you do not understand, and ask your questions now, not on the evening the owner departs.

    With the house guide:

Read it before leaving. Note any unclear points. Verify that you have the vet's number, the exact animal feed portions, and a way to reach the owner at their destination.

The first evening: the 4 critical hours

Animals take 24 to 48 hours to accept a new guardian. The first evening is often the most challenging.

    What helps:

    • Maintain the exact same routine as usual (mealtime, walk time, sleeping area)
    • Do not overcompensate with treats or forced cuddles. This creates agitation, not a sense of security
    • Remain calm if the animal is anxious. Your emotional state is directly transmitted

What is normal on the first evening:

    • Dog eating little or nothing
    • Cat hiding
    • Animal looking for the owner at doors or windows

What is not normal and requires calling the owner:

    • Repeated vomiting
    • Complete refusal to drink
    • Obvious distress that does not subside

    During the sit: communication

Send updates without being intrusive. A photo in the morning, a message in the evening. No need for lengthy stories, just proof of your presence and that everything is fine.

"Good night from Lyon, Tofu ate dinner and fell asleep on the couch."

That is sufficient. This is what owners expect. And this is what generates the "Daily updates" badge.

    What you should not do:

    • Disappear for 48 hours without providing updates
    • Send an alarming message for something minor
    • Contact the owner 5 times a day for questions that have an answer in the house guide

The end of the sit: the details that matter

Leave the house in the condition you found it, or better.

No need for a deep clean, but:

    • Dishes done
    • Trash taken out if it is collection day
    • Bed where you slept remade
    • No displaced items without putting them back

On the owner's return day: be present or ensure a smooth handover. Do not leave before they arrive without having arranged key return.

The review: write it within 48 hours

The review you leave for the owner is not a mere formality. It is a sign of professionalism. Guardians who leave detailed and prompt reviews receive more applications. Owners see that you actively participate in the community.

Mention something concrete: the animal, the house, a specific moment. Not "everything went very well," but rather "Léa was adorable from the very first evening and the garden was a real pleasure to maintain."
